Q: How do you select families?

A: Typically, 1-3 times per year we open our homeownership application process (for five weeks at a time). During this time, individuals and families are able to fill out a paper application and submit required documents (income documentation, last 30 days of recurring bills, copy of ID) for us to review.

The review process takes a few months (in large part due to the number of applications we may receive). When we are reviewing applicants myself and the five members of our Family Selection Committee (volunteers from outside Muncie Habitat) look at 3 categories of eligibility: (1) Need for Housing (2) Ability to Pay the Habitat Mortgage (3) Willingness to Partner. Applicants that make it far enough into the process do an in-home interview (though this has been virtual, over Zoom ever since Covid) and we run an employer and landlord verification where applicable. After we have everything we need for final review the Family Selection Committee makes recommendations that go to the Board of Directors for final approval.
